Overview
MoonPay's pricing varies by geography, payment method and customer tier, with platform fees, usage charges, graduated volume tiers and FX tiers layered on top. Every contract is negotiated individually, and the billing itself sits inside a B2B2C model where some fees are settled at the transaction level by end customers and the rest need to be invoiced to the partner monthly. As MoonPay's partner contracts grew more complex, the team wanted purpose-built infrastructure rather than spreadsheet-based processes to keep pace with scale. Sequence gave MoonPay's operations team a product catalog that models their actual pricing, a usage pipeline that feeds directly into invoice generation, and a dashboard they run themselves without needing any internal engineering support.
The Challenge
- Usage-based pricing complexity that outgrew spreadsheet-based billing.
- Ensuring every invoice line matched the negotiated contract terms exactly, at scale.
- A B2B2C model where some fees are settled at the transaction level and others invoiced monthly, requiring a clear way to distinguish transaction-level settlement from monthly invoicing.
“As we added more partners with their own negotiated terms, our existing manual process started to show its limits.”

The Solution
A product catalog that handles their consumption-based pricing model: Graduated volume tiers, percentage-based rates, per-unit charges, virtual account fees, FX fees. Each product carries a list price that can be overridden per customer. New customers are set up by duplicating a template billing schedule, stripping out what doesn't apply, and setting the negotiated prices. The catalog models the actual contract down to the line item.
Transactions already paid at settlement are marked, not credited back: Where an end customer has already covered a transaction fee, that transaction carries an event property recording it as paid, and Sequence leaves it off the partner's monthly invoice. MoonPay does not have to invoice the full transaction list and then issue credits to correct it, which was the alternative and would have put the reconciliation back on the operations team every month. The same event properties carry the payment rail, so a SEPA transaction and a card transaction on the same customer are priced differently on the same invoice.
Custom metrics scoped to each currency and payment rail: MoonPay's percentage tiers, per-transaction minimums, per active end user account fees and fixed rail fees sit in Sequence as separate custom metrics and prices, each scoped to the currency and rail it applies to. A partner settling in EUR over SEPA and a partner on USD rails run off the same catalog rather than needing workaround products for every combination. MoonPay can also move a customer between volume tiers as their monthly usage changes, without rebuilding the schedule underneath them.
Finance & Ops runs billing without engineering: MoonPay's operations team manages the full billing workflow through Sequence's dashboard. With support from Sequence, they rebuilt the entire product catalog, migrated every customer to the new setup, and deprecated legacy products and metrics, without pulling in engineering.
“Complex, negotiated contracts are the norm for us now, and we wanted a system built for that reality from day one, with full visibility for finance at every step. Sequence let us build that without pulling engineering off other priorities.”
